Disclosure: This review is published by ESR. ESR Lab and our team tested the AirStance for the iPad mini 8 (A20 Pro) with ESR samples, including stand positions, magnetic pull force, sleep and wake, and Apple Pencil Pro attachment and charging. The results come from our own testing. Specs, price, and availability vary by model.
You’re on a train with your iPad mini 8 in a jacket pocket. When you pull it out, you want the cover to fold back without a fight, the screen to sit at a comfortable angle on the tray table, and the Pencil to be right where you left it. An hour later you’re on a video call at your desk, and the same iPad needs to sit a little more upright.
The ESR AirStance is built around those everyday switches. The case can be summed up with the line “Built Light. Stands Right.”, and this iPad mini 8 case review checks how that holds up on the iPad mini 8 (A20 Pro): how much weight and thickness the case adds, how the stand positions work, and what the back flap does for an Apple Pencil.
At 176 g with a 2.2 mm front cover, the AirStance gives the mini three landscape angles, a portrait position and a flap for the Pencil. If you read, write and watch on the same tablet, that’s a useful mix. If you mostly hold the mini in one hand and rarely prop it up, a lighter case will suit you better.

Shop AirStance for iPad mini 8What the ESR AirStance Is
The AirStance is a one-piece magnetic folio case made for the iPad mini 8 (A20 Pro). The PU-covered back snaps onto the tablet, and the front cover folds into a stand. Because the cover doesn’t detach, you don’t have a separate piece to carry around or lose.
Under the soft PU surface, boards give the case its shape, built-in magnets close the cover and hold the stand, and an iron sheet gives the stand’s magnets something to grip. This build is sturdier than a plain PU cover, and the exterior should hold up for a couple of years of regular use. The case comes in Black, Sky Blue, Purple, and Sand.

How the AirStance Stand Works
In landscape, the stand holds the iPad mini 8 at 25°, 45°, or 60°, and magnets keep it in place at each position. Portrait takes two steps: set the support flap into the second magnetic groove, then fold the triangular panel outward to form the base. That gives you an iPad mini case with a stand for both orientations. The positions are fixed stops, not a continuous hinge.
The stand suits writing, drawing, watching, and gaming, without tying one angle to a specific job. The pairings here are our suggestions. A lower angle may feel natural for handwriting and sketching, a steeper one tends to suit video, and the middle angle works for reading or browsing at a desk. Portrait is handy for documents, recipes, and other vertical content.
Portrait takes a little more effort than a single fold. That’s fine for a long article and slightly annoying if you flip orientation every few minutes.
Apple Pencil and the Back Flap
Apple Pencil Pro attaches magnetically to the side of the iPad mini 8 and can charge while the case is on. It also supports the Apple Pencil (USB-C).
When you carry the iPad, the back flap wraps over the Pencil. With a Pencil Pro, you snap it onto the magnetic edge and fold the flap across it. The same flap holds Apple Pencil (USB-C) in place. It works as an Apple Pencil holder that grips the pen against the back of the case, so you don’t have to slide it into a slot or tube.
If your Pencil travels with the tablet, the flap solves a real problem. If yours usually stays in a bag or on a desk, you won’t miss it, and a case without one will be a little simpler.
Weight, Thickness and Protection
The case alone weighs 176 g and measures 196 × 136 × 11 mm. The front cover is 2.2 mm thick, slightly thicker than a US quarter (1.75 mm). People usually buy the iPad mini for its compact size, and these AirStance dimensions keep it practical to carry in a small bag.
Closing the cover puts the iPad to sleep, and opening it wakes the screen automatically. In ESR Lab testing, the magnets holding the case to the iPad averaged 1,000 g of pull force when the case was attached directly to the tablet and a machine applied force over repeated runs. That number shows how firmly the case holds on to the iPad.
For protection, the PU back covers the rear of the iPad, and the front cover protects the screen while it’s closed. The metal edges and corners are left uncovered, so the AirStance is a slim folio meant for everyday carry rather than a bumper-style case. With the cover open, the display is exposed. To clean the case, wipe with a damp cloth.
If the AirStance Isn’t the Right Fit
If you want a cover you can take off, ESR’s Rebound Magnetic Case for the iPad mini lets you do that and is a little lighter. If you’d rather have minimal bulk and no front cover, ESR’s clear back cases are even lighter. Our guide on choosing an iPad mini 8 case compares the styles side by side.
How We Tested
For this AirStance case review, ESR Lab and our team tested the case on an iPad mini 8 (A20 Pro) using ESR samples. The magnetic hold figure comes from a pull test in which the case is attached directly to the tablet, a machine applies the pulling force, and the result is the average of repeated runs. We also checked the stand positions, sleep and wake, and Apple Pencil Pro attachment and charging with the case on the tablet. Because this is ESR testing an ESR product, we report the figures as measured and label our advice as suggestions.
FAQ
Is the ESR AirStance case worth it?
That depends on how much you’ll use what it adds. If you move between reading, writing, and watching, and you want portrait support and a secure spot for the Pencil, the extra structure pays off. If you mostly hold the iPad mini in one hand and rarely prop it up, a lighter back case will do the job.
Is the AirStance good for drawing and note-taking?
It can work well. The 25° landscape angle is the lowest of the three, which may suit handwriting and sketching; the Apple Pencil Pro attaches and charges with the case on, and the flap holds the Pencil when you move. The positions are fixed, so if you like to change your drawing angle in small steps, three landscape stops may feel limiting.
Does the AirStance work with Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C)?
Yes. Apple Pencil Pro attaches to the side of the iPad and charges with the case on. It also supports Apple Pencil (USB-C), and the back flap holds either Pencil in place.
Does the AirStance come in other sizes, and does it fit iPad mini 7?
AirStance is also made for the iPad Air 11-inch (M2, M3, and M4) and the iPad Pro 13-inch (M4 and M5), available from October 30. Each version fits only its own model. There’s no AirStance for iPad mini 7 or iPad mini 6, which have different dimensions.
What is it made of, and how do I clean it?
The exterior is soft PU over boards, built-in magnets, and an iron sheet. It’s PU, not genuine leather. Wipe it with a damp cloth. ESR expects the exterior to hold up for a couple of years of regular use.
Final Verdict
The AirStance adds weight and structure, but you get three landscape angles, a portrait position, and a secure place for your Pencil. If you read, write, and watch on the same iPad mini 8 and want a front cover that stays attached, that’s a fair trade. If you mostly hold the mini in one hand and rarely prop it up, a lighter back case is the better call.
